My Racer X(L) build cost to date

what this this cost me so far......

Welcome to My Racer X(L) build, my very own passion project. Perhaps My Racer X(L) build will show you it is possible.
I however will be honest with you and share how much this has cost me to build every step of the way.

All figures quoted are in Australian Dollars. I will give a final cost when it has been built. This is a passion project, not a sales exersise.

Cost of project to date: Welcome

Timber

18*18 @ 110m - $290

30*18 @ 23m - $63

42*18 @ 4m - $15

your prices will be different. Timber prices are so quick to change at this point in time. Talk to them and they will help you out if they can.

I got the hoop pine from DTP in Brassall.

Great group of guys and I've always been happy with their level of help.

Give them a call and talk to them about what you're looking to build. Great help and as always, super quick service.

I bought a 6mm sheet of marine ply from Plywood and Panel. That cost around $70. And yes you need a full sheet.

Rowing fittings bought

Basically I am buying all of the rowing fittings. These are parts I can't make or will find easier to buy.
Links to stores have been given. I get no sales or commission for these. I will be getting what I need to get going and do it right from the start.

Oars

Croker S6 Trainers with a Slick blade. 287cm long. White but may be painted in the future.

I bought these 2nd hand but in new condition. I found them online for a very good price ($300-400 I think) and they are being stored out of the light until required.

https://www.crokeroars.com/sculling-oars

I will get a set of locks from Croker in the future but I will price them later.

everything else

At this point, everything else will probably come from Sykes Rowing

https://www.sykes.com.au/

Slide kit (pair) - $17.60 each

Axles (pair) - $15.40 each

S/S bolts (4) - $3.30 each

A Seat will come at a later date. I've not yet decided on a carbon fibre or synthetic seat yet, probably a carbon one. I will look at making a wooden one in the future once I have more time to learn CNC and play with that method of production.

Boat fittings bought

These are the boat fittings I've bought.
Links to the store I bought them from have been provided.
I get no sales or commission for this. Great service for the results I want.

As detailed in the build guide, I bought the following.

  • 2 * Inspection Port 4" Black

  • 1 * Inspection Port 6" Black

  • 1 * Inspection Port 6" Black with Kitbag

  • 1 * plastic drain port

All up nothing fancy but this has cost me about $100. I bought one port with a kitbag as a place to stuff my phone and keys when I'm out rowing. I will get a separate waterproof pouch to protect my phone as added insurance in the coming future. I'm not sure which hatch will get the inspection port with the bag but that will be determined in the coming future. For all I know, I will buy a 2nd port and on-sell the 6" port.

All products were sourced from the Boat Hut at Acacia Ridge. Call them on 1300 773 332 or visit https://www.boathut.com.au/

Top-notch service and help. Their catalogue is good and worth the effort. I highly recommend their store.

Other items such as lights, go pro mount, water bottle mount, ect, will be decided as I build the boat and hopefully before I skin it.

Covering the project

Now you need to put some clothes on this horse

I got some PVC fabric from Queensland Wholesale Canvas. Now as I run away from people throwing darts. There is a blog post about it. have a read of it.

In short, I bought the following

8m of Endeavour 600 for $160.

A link to the manufacturers website is

https://www.waxcon.com.au/transport-general-pvc.htm

The website that I'm using to guide me though the process of covering the project is Yost Werks.

http://yostwerks.org/SkinMenu.html

I'm not building a Kayak so I need to understand what I'm doing. There are a few minor changes here and there, but the process is kind of the same but adapted for a much bigger boat.

Basically, there are some things coming from how to cover the boat in Polyester and most from the Yost Werks PVC guide.

Stuff and Tools used

This is an interesting topic. I have a home workshop already and some tools I cant price but I will give details and you can look them up.
If I have bought them during this build process I will price them.

  • Pencils

  • Craft knife

  • Spray glue - $20

  • Ozito jigsaw

  • Ozito bandsaw - $129

  • Drill press

  • Electric screwdriver. this is a cheat thing but mine is a decent drill type from Milwaukee. really worth looking into.

  • Sanding Drums

  • Router Table

  • AEG router

  • Flush trimming bit - $30

  • Various S/S steel screws. All from 316 S/S (I used ANZOR. Highly reccommded. https://www.anzor.com.au/)

  • Tef Gel - an anti corriosion gel. I've been told it's good gear. I'd use it on any metal to metal parts to stop your expensive parts from looking mucky. I row in salty water so this will be worth the expense.

  • Epoxy Glue - This is something that you will need and use more than I thought of. I have primarily used epoxy resins from Boatcraft Pacific and used Bote-Cote glues. The primary glue used has been Epox-E-Glue in this build in both "White" and "Cedar".
At this stage i have used a full 1kg ($64) in building the frame and I have an extra 600g ($44) to build the rest. If I was doing this from scratch, I would have bought their 1.6kg kit. I'd really like a 2KG kit.
Really good glue. it already includes the fillers, is thick like pudding and so far I've had no thermal runaway in hot conditions. I wish id known about this stuff a while ago. It really is good stuff. It is now my go-to epoxy glue. It is not a flood coat, pouring epoxy but as a pure glue, it's damn good.

  • Epoxy Glue type 2 is a Bote-Cote Epoxy kit with a "tropical" hardener. This will slow the speed of the epoxy so I can do some fiber glassing. I have the 1.5 litre kit for this purpose.

  • I have some fiberglass matting. I got excess to the plans. I have around 3m of cloth from a .75 wide roll. Again this is all from the plans of the Racer X.
