Well now that the timber is on order, I'd better get around to making a scarfing Jig.
I have been wondering how to make this for a while now. There are lots of methods and I have lots of machines that can do it. My issue is that the timber will be long and my workshop won't take long lengths in one direction so I need a plan B.
I wont use the drop saw because a 1:6 ratio triangle means that there is only a 9 degree angle on this cut and that's rather narrow on a 12 drop saw. I value my fingers more.
I could make a jig for the sander but again it's a narrow-angle and I don't want the fine saw dust everywhere.
my solution is a custom shooting board and using my timber planes. Below is a basic setup of a shooting board. I have more than enough MDF leftover from yesterday so off I go to cut.

I'm making mine pretty big, 500 by 300 wide. That's pretty big but the plane I'm using is pretty big too so it needs the room. custom make yours to fit the equipment you have.

I have 3 bits of MDF similar to the above image. I cut 1 with a 9 degree angle on the drop saw and that will become the angle set. That means I will be scarfing at a 1:6.3 ratio.
I then glued the bigger boards together being sure to keep them referenced on their straight, plumb lines.

There is one last glue layer and that's for the 3rd bit to set the 9-degree angle. All of this was just glued together. Knowing that glue bonds can be stronger than nails, I should be able to leave all of this as is.
When the glue is dry, I will trim it to size so it's a little smaller and rub beeswax on the lower section of the jig so my plane will glide better but that's about all I need to do to this shooting board.
Be good and know how to calculate angles in a triangle.
